Paqui Castro: The Pioneer Who Transformed Children’s Music Education

Creator of the Diapason the Wizard Method, a revolutionary approach that has taught music to more than 90,000 children in a natural and enjoyable way.

Paqui Castro, the educator who transformed children’s music teaching with her innovative method.

An Exceptional Educator

Paqui Castro is an exceptional educator who saw what no one else saw: that children can learn music as naturally as they learn to speak. With an extraordinary intuition for understanding the world of the child, she created a method that respects each child’s rhythms while developing their full musical potential.

Her revolutionary approach turns complex concepts into magical games, making music education an exciting adventure rather than an obligation.

Her Educational Legacy

  • More than 90,000 students taught using her method
  • 30 years of experience in children’s music education
  • Team of teachers throughout Spain, Mexico and Chile
  • An international reference in music pedagogy

“Music should be learned with the heart, not just with the head”

Paqui Castro showed that when music education is based on play and affection, children not only learn faster but love music for life.

Flamenco Roots, Universal Soul

Born into a family that lived flamenco with passion, Paqui grew up listening to her father play the guitar while she and her sisters sang and danced. This musical upbringing taught her a fundamental truth: music should be fun, spontaneous and shared.

From an early age, her calling as an educator was clear. At 14 she was already giving guitar lessons, but she didn’t like the traditional method. She dreamed of a way of teaching music that would be as natural as learning a mother tongue.

This vision led her to question everything: why did music have to be difficult? Why couldn’t it be learned through play? These questions would be the seed of her revolutionary method.

The Moment That Changed Everything

Everything changed when Paqui entered the Conservatory. There she discovered written musical language and was fascinated, but also concerned. She saw how music was taught so rigidly and technically that all the magic and emotion were lost.

“It can’t be like this,” she thought. “Music is emotion, it’s life, it’s play. Why are we turning it into something so dull?” It was then she promised that if she ever had children, she would teach them music in a different way: fun, natural, but always grounded in musical truth.

This promise became her life’s mission and the seed of the Diapason the Wizard Method.

Paqui Castro in Action

The Birth of Diapason the Wizard

When Paqui became pregnant with her first child, Pablo, she knew it was time to put all her ideas into practice. During the pregnancy, she began stimulating the baby with music, creating the first routines that would later become her method.

The ‘eureka’ moment came when she created the character of “Diapason the Wizard”, a wizard with a tuning-fork‑shaped wand that, when touched, sang the A note. This character became the guiding thread of a whole fantasy world where children learned music without realising it.

Through stories, games and songs, Paqui turned complex concepts such as rhythm, pitch and music reading into exciting adventures for children.

What began in her dining room with a few children became an educational phenomenon. In 1997 she opened her first Diapason the Wizard school and in 2001 she began training other teachers in her methodology.

Today, more than 25 years on, her method is established across Spain and Mexico, with thousands of children learning music with the same joy and ease she had imagined.

Her Impact

  • Own schools in multiple cities
  • Educational programme in schools
  • Teacher training certified
  • Teaching materials proprietary and exclusive

A Family of Musicians

The clearest result of her method can be seen in her own family. Her husband is a cellist with the Orquesta Nacional de España and her two children, Pablo and Sara Ferrández, are internationally renowned soloists.

Pablo Ferrández plays the 1689 Stradivarius cello ‘Archinto’, one of the most prestigious instruments in the world. Sara Ferrández is principal violist at the Philharmonie de Berlín and plays a 1730 David Tecchler viola.

Both were brought up with the Diapason the Wizard Method and are the best testament to the success of their mother’s pedagogy.

Recognition and Legacy

Paqui Castro is internationally recognised as one of the most innovative music educators of our time. Her method has been studied and adopted by educators around the world who are seeking a more humane and effective way to teach music.

But for her, the greatest recognition is not awards or fame, but seeing thousands of children discover the magic of music thanks to her method. ‘When I see a three-year-old read a piece of music and smile,’ she says, ‘I know it has all been worth it.’
